You were never out of time.
You were out of margin.
The resource nobody is counting
The binding scarcity of modern life is not time and not attention. It is cognitive processing capacity — the room a mind needs to judge well, to create, to reflect, to be present. Margin is the reserve of that capacity left over after the day's demands are met.
Cognitive demand has grown by orders of magnitude in the last seventy years. Capacity has not. The gap is where the tired, distracted, second-rate quality of ordinary decisions now lives.
Every household keeps a rough gauge on money and time. Almost no one keeps one on thinking. The account runs down without a statement, and the first sign of trouble is that everything feels harder than it should.
